Just a correction to cognizant dissident's book recommendation: "Wherever You Go, There You Are" by Jon Kabat-Zinn (not 'Everywhere').
Thanks for posting about them - will probably buy those.

Moral Values of an Atheist
by hamilcarr insome thoughts spinning through my head .... what does it mean to be an atheist?
it means you cannot imagine your homosexual neighbor being slaughtered by a loving god at judgment's day, it means you don't consider the primitive tribe described in numbers 31 that slew midianite men and raped innocent virgins to be god's first covenant people, it means you don't believe mankind is so perverted that it is in need of salvation through a man who came 'not with peace, but with a sword', it means you have high moral values that apply not only to the members of your denomination but to all men.. h. .

"you do the right thing simply because it is the right thing"
But what if someone else, even another atheist, disagrees with your view of what is 'the right thing'? What would make your view of 'the right thing' better than someone else's view?
Nothing.
Hence, athiests are never restricted to an absolute, fixed set of morals, but can collectively develop (evolve?) the way the human race deals with itself and its environment.

All moral values are human; all too human. Some can't accept that and so have to believe in a higher purpose.

eyes open you say you studied the Bible and came to the conclusion of what?
That it is not inspired by any divine being and is a collection of literature written by humans. This means I don't belive in it.

eyes open they dont believe in him either so how do you measure your success
They may demote the character's significance as compared to the writers of the new testament, but they believe in him in the basic sense of the phrase. Personally, I measure my success as related to beliefs by intellectual honesty. I no longer believe in spiritual things to satisfy my selfish desire to live forever, here on earth or anywhere else. I spent months researching the bible, amidst the worst emotional stress I have ever experienced, and prayed that if my suspicions that it wasn't God's word were erroneous I would find out so. I accept that one day I am going to die and that the time my consciousness has is limited; just like every other living thing on this planet.
The truth hurts, but I'm now glad to have opened up to it.

I've found out a bit more about Jesus according to the bible since I stopped going to JW meetings. I don't believe in him anymore.

What people do not realise is that we are at war. This is not a physical war but a spiritual war. We became a Non-governmental organization to access the U.N.’s vast library. In doing so we had to promote the United Nations within our magazines. We did this in such a way that our readers wouldn’t really notice, but it gave us access to information previously unavailable. Remember, we are at war with the world. In a war, you lie, you cheat, you kill and the means justifies the end. This is no different.
Whatever it is, it's not a proper interview with a "faithful" JW spokesman as they would never say that.

What does Jehovah do?
by LouBelle inokay this is for current jws' - if there are lurkers, or for those that may not neccessarily believe in jehovah but believe that him and jesus are 2 different spirits.. we have jesus - creating the world and everything in it, then he's on earth healing, preaching.
he dies, gets resurrected and goes back to heaven.
throws satan and his demons outta heaven in 1914, rules the kingdom, checking sure that everything is going smoothly........ what is jehovah doing?
